Postpartum Support Virginia’s MISSION is to educate families, healthcare providers and communities about Perinatal Mood & Anxiety Disorders (PMADs) and to provide resources to help new and expectant mothers and their families overcome anxiety, depression, and other PMADs.

Postpartum Support Virginia’s VISION is that all birthing people and parents in Virginia will receive information about PMADs, be screened for them during pregnancy and throughout the first year after birth and have access to resources for recovery.

We fulfill this mission by:

  • Being a direct resource for perinatal people through providing social support services led by those with lived PMAD experiences.
  • Educating healthcare providers, maternal health providers, and mental health professionals about the spectrum of PMADs and how to screen for them, as well as specific training for mental health providers on therapeutic approaches to treat PMADs.  .
  • Serving as a resource for information as well as referrals to trained mental health professionals.
  • Gathering communities to create community-level solutions for PMADs. Conducting community outreach and education to raise awareness and expand referral resources.

Resources for Families

The #1 complication of pregnancy and childbirth is Perinatal Mood & Anxiety Disorders (PMADs)–most commonly, anxiety and depression.

The good news is PMADs are temporary and can be treated with a combination of self-care, social support, talk therapy, and medication if necessary.

Resources for Healthcare & Mental Health Providers

PSVa works with medical and mental health professionals across the state of Virginia to provide training in understanding and screening of PMADs, and to create partnerships for referral to those who need treatment.

Nurture Circles Support Group will not be meeting 3/29. If you need support, please call the Warmline 703-829-7152.
